A striking new discovery has been made at Pompei. A burial chamber has been found near the Sarno Gate, containing the semi-mumified body of a freed slave, Marcus Venerius Secundio. He was buried during a period when it was normal to incinerate dead bodies, and the fact that he was preserved illustrates his social standing. An inscription in Greek was also found in the tomb, adding to the importance of the find. He been a guardian of the Temple of Venus in Pompei, and a 'minister' of the Augustali priests. After his liberation he became an Augustale priest himself.
